Lowery to Focus on Young Adults

As the disturbing statistics of declines in baptisms of the 18-34 age group continue, Oklahoma Baptists are working to turn the tide in keeping those young adults in church and bringing in more of that age group.

I'm a 31 year old former youth pastor who has worked in the church and out of the church. I am very conscience of doctrinal issues and asked my pastor what the purpose of the Baptist statement of faith was and what defined a church as Southern Baptist. I was very disappointed to hear him tell me that the statement of faith was not intended to be creedal and that no matter what any church believed or taught, it would be considered 'Southern Baptist' if it donated to the cooperative program! I think that 20 & 30 somethings like myself desire some specific doctrinal truths to unite around and be defined by. This is the type of relational entity i want to be associated with...not one who is defined by giving money. It may be that we think that what Jesus actually did on the cross in history is more important in defining the church than what private relationship we think we have with Him on the inside. I dont even like the word 'Evangelical' because it seems to have no doctrinal boundaries...nor does 'Southern Baptist'... later
