EDITORIAL: Former president should practice what he preaches

During the opening session of the "New Baptist Covenant Celebration" in Atlanta Jan. 30, former President Jimmy Carter called for Baptists of all races, political leanings and theological stances to unite around a common belief in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to set aside the differences that have caused divisions.

Our deacon came to us, after Mr Carter had been in office for awhile, and apologised for getting upset with us for not voting for Mr Carter...."a So. Bap." Nothing he does surprises us at all. He is so messed up scriptually he is a danger to the church and the lost.

Amen to your story! It is so sad to see folks being blinded and diluted by Satan. There are 86,400 seconds in every 24 hour day, so brother and/or sister, we had better be diligent in seeking God's total leadership and direction for our lives during every second of every day. The more we resemble the world then the easier it is for Satan to deceive and trick us, thus ultimate dilution. Once spiritual dilution sets in then we begin to resemble the world in appearance and deed. We have diluted church members today that think alcohol consumption, smoking, gambling, lying, gossiping, apathy for the Lord's work, overeating (one of my bigger battles), non-tithing, alternate life styles, etc., is alright to do. As Satan continues to dilute us spiritually we even give in to murderous deeds such as abortion. We have Sunday school teachers in some of our churches that think all the aforementioned items are alright and this includes murderous abortion. Perhaps this is why over 7,000 of our SBC churches did not baptize a single soul last year. Our churches are becoming bogged down by church folks that have been deceived by Satan and they then try to push their confused and deceived notions on those that are giving their all for God. A good example is our Governor. He tolerates abortion (murder) and he led the way to bring gambling into our state. He too should join the new sin-friendly convention alongside former president Jimmy Carter. Yes, God loves dearly both lost and saved sinners. We Christians are all sinners that are saved by God’s grace. We are to admonish one another in efforts to keep ourselves on the straight, narrow, and constrictive path. God bless the SBC and all those involved within the many facets of ministry as we strive to reach the world for Christ. Earl Hall, Sparks FBC.

Wow. You certainly didn't take the high road in your response to Jimmy Carter. Yes, Carter may have left the SBC and appears to not be taking his own advice. But I fear the SBC is also in the same boat as Carter. How many people have been pushed out over verses in the "inerrant" Bible you mention? I am thinking of a controversy here in Oklahoma over baptism a few months ago. I am thinking of a trustee of SWBTS mentioning tongues in a message to students and the message being taken off the website so that unsuspecting church folks aren't led astray. I am thinking of the many Baptist churches who have been kicked out because they had a woman in a leadership position or welcomed gays and lesbians into their congregations. I didn't realize that the event Carter helped organize is a "new denomination." Can you explain this? This article sounds like a knee-jerk reaction to Carter. It's funny how every time Carter sneezes, the leadership of the SBC shoots off an article to bpnews or a state convention newspaper making sure the poor unsuspecting Baptists in the pews aren't led astray by our former President. The squeaky wheel really does get the grease, doesn't it?!

I think instead of bashing former President Jimmy Carter, it would be better to actually do what Jesus said to, and "love our enemies". If this was a call for Southern Baptists to pray for Jimmy Carter and former Pres. Clinton, I wouldn't be sad at the conclusion of reading this article. Is this the best that Southern Baptists can do? Maybe this is part of the reason baptism's are so low. We should spend more time praying for those we disagree with, and keeping our negative opinions to ourselves---myself included.

Actually, Jimmy Carter does not "cause" division. He may not agree with the way things are in the SBC, so he left. But his efforts to unite the larger community of Baptists worldwide around the heart of the Gospel - which is missions - are sincere. I covered virtually every minute of the New Baptist Covenant meeting in Atlanta and it was a thing of beauty.

It appears rather arrogant to accuse the former President of promoting divisiveness when he was, in fact, promoting unity among Baptists...

You wrote that the SBC is " the greatest evangelical organization in Christendom" That's not arrogant?

The editor needs to get his facts straight before writing an article like this. The New Baptist Covenant Celebration has nothing to do with starting a new denomination. It is not a new denomination and was never thought to be so. The New Baptist Covenant is exactly that. Its a covenant claiming that a diverse group of Baptists and their denominations will work together to help stop poverty and other social justice issues. The 9,000-15,000 that were in attendence were not there to start a new denomination, but were there to make a point that something has to be done in this world to feed the hungry and clothe the naked. These people want to do what Jesus commands us to do. Therefore, organizing an event that would rally together over issues of social justice, I think is a great moment in President Carter's religious life.

It was with sorrow that I read such an editorial. It maligns a man who, I would submit, has followed the admonition of James to not merely be a hearer of the word but a doer. Has he not looked after orphans and widows in their distress? Has he not sought peace among warring nations? Has he not spoken out on issues, though unpopular, with a hope toward creating dialogue and discussion among civil people? Has he not worked tirelessly since leaving office to make our world a better place? The words of James are apropos in this situation: "If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless." Your editorial is not a critique of his words but is a demonstration of veiled contempt. That is what brings me sorrow.

If Carter no longer wants to be a part of the SBC that is fine. If people decide they don't want to consent to sound doctine and sacrifice truth on the alter of unity I guess that also is the perogitive of the individual. We that know the truth of the inerrancy of scripture only have the duty to pray for those who are in the dark and not be yoked together with them.
